ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Dynapenia is a risk factor of mortality. Therefore, the development of low-cost and easy-to-apply tools is essential to optimize the health surveillance actions of older people. OBJECTIVES: To compare the time spent on habitual physical activity (HPA) and sedentary behavior (SB) among dynapenic and non-dynapenic older adults and ascertain the predictive ability of these behaviors on outcome. DESIGN AND SETTING: A cross-sectional population epidemiological survey was conducted involving 208 older adults. METHODS: HPA and SB were quantified using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire, and dynapenia was identified by handgrip strength (women: 18.37 kgf; men: 26.75 kgf). RESULTS: The prevalence was 24.50%. In both sexes, dynapenic individuals reported a HPA median time of 70.00 minutes/week (min/wk), while non-dynapenic women and men reported HPA median times of 240.00 and 280.00 min/wk, respectively (P < 0.05). For SB among dynapenic individuals, a median of 388.75 min/day was observed in women and 428.57 min/d in men. In contrast, non-dynapenic women and men had 291.42 and 274.28 min/day in SB (P < 0.05), respectively. The best cutoff HPA to discriminate the outcome was 150.00 min/wk in women (sensitivity: 73.30%; specificity: 60.67%) and 140.00 min/wk in men (sensitivity, 71.43%; specificity, 61.54%). The best cutoff SB was 381.43 min/day in women (sensitivity, 53.30%; specificity, 84.80%) and 351.43 min/day in men (sensitivity, 71.43%; specificity, 73.85%). CONCLUSION: Older individuals with dynapenia spent less time on HPA and more time in SB. Furthermore, HPA was found to be a better discriminator of dynapenic individuals, and SB better discriminated non-dynapenic individuals.

ABSTRACT

At present, the early identification of cerebral palsy still poses a major challenge for the health system worldwide. Great advances have been made in neonatology in reducing mortality, but not morbimortality. Cerebral palsy remains the most common sequela of all developmental disorders, especially among those born prematurely. The possibility of early detection before 5 months of age has many benefits for the child and their family, since it allows very early initiation of treatment. In this study, we describe a highly sensitive and specific tool known as Prechtl's assessment of general movements and its potential complementation with technological apps for early detection.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To verify the relationship between risk and fear of falling in older women participating of social projects. Methods: Cross-sectional study, conducted with 59 older women participating in a social project offered by the city of Cianorte-PR. To assess the fear of falling, the FES-1-BRASIL was used. To assess gait mobility and risk of falling, the Timed Up & Go (TUG) test was applied. Descriptive statistics (frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation), the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, independent student's t test and Pearson's correlation were used for data analysis, with a significance of p< 0.05. Results: the older women had a moderate to high risk of falling. The analysis of the elderly women's fear of falling evidenced a mean score of 27.4 ± 6.91. Regarding mobility and balance, it was found that the average time to perform the TUG was 11.6 ± 2.9 seconds. Women under 70 years of age who had been in the project for more than three years had less fear and lower risk of falling (p= 0.039 and p= 0.001, respectively). The following significant correlations were found (p< 0.05): fear of falling with time of participation in the project (r= -0.42); risk of falling with age (r= 0.29) and fear of falling (r= 0.56). Conclusion: From the results obtained, we concluded that age and time of participation in the project seem to be intervening factors in the fear and risk of falling among the elderly women. It is noted that the women under 70 years of age and those with more extended participation in the social project had less fear and risk of falling. In addition, it was possible to observe that the he risk of falling is directly associated with the fear of falling.

ABSTRACT

Public open spaces (POSs) are means to ensure one's right to recreation and health. The objective of this essay is to present reflections and evidence on how these spaces contribute to promoting physi-cal activity (PA). Understanding how to access (proximity/distance), quantity and diversity, and the surrounding and internal conditions of places (quality, structure, aesthetics, safety) can affect the use of POSs is imperative for public management actions. Thinking of POS use beyond PA by recog-nizing its social, economic, and cultural benefits can be fundamental to reduce inequalities regarding access to these places. POS-related actions and demands are intersectoral, multiprofessional, and interdisciplinary, thus requiring political, academic, and community involvement and commitment for PA promotion

ABSTRACT

The aim of this cross-sectional study was to analyze the association between the built environment at school and in the neighborhood and daily physical activity (DPA) and daily screen use (DS) among students with different behavioral patterns. Participants were students (9.1 ± 1.38 years, 53.2% girls) from the 2nd to the 5th year of public schools (n = 2,384), in the city of Feira de Santana, BA. Physical activities and sed-entary behaviors were assessed using an online questionnaire ( Web-CAAFE) and used to define behavioral patterns by cluster analysis, segmented by gender. Built environment at school (playground and covered spaces for physical activities) and in the neighborhood (sports courts, soccer fields, parks and squares) were the exposures variables. The outcomes, DPA and DS, were obtained by the sum the one-day reports. Mul-tiple negative binomial regression models, controlled for age and Body Mass Index z-score, were estimated prevalence ratios (PR) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI). DPA was associated with squares among "active players" girls (PR = 1.35; 95%CI: 1.09 - 1.68) and with covered spaces for physical activities among "sedentary/Household chores performers" (PR = 0.86; 95%CI: 075 - 0.97). Among "sedentary in academic tasks" boys, DPA was associated with Soccer fields (PR = 1.20; 95%CI: 1.02 - 1.42) and DS with Play-ground (PR = 1.17; 95%CI: 1.00 - 1.37). DS was also associated with Covered spaces for physical activity among "sedentary on screen" (PR = 1.28; 95%CI: 1.04 - 1.57). DPA and DS of boys and girls with different behavior patterns were associated with several built environment factors

ABSTRACT

The objective was to verify the access to body practices/physical activity (BPPA) throughout the life of retired elderly women participating in a group of BPPA. This is a qualitative study with 16 elderly women aged between 65 and 75 years, selected for convenience, participants of a PCAF group at a Public Health Centre in Londrina, Brazil. The information was collected from interviews with a semi-structured script, which were conducted individually by the professional responsible for the group and analyzed from the content analysis by the category system. Three analysis categories were considered: childhood/adolescence; adulthood; and Old age. In childhood/adolescence, the women reported that they had no encouragement from their parents and had no physical education at school. In adulthood, lack of time and lack of encouragement from partners, in addition to the lack of knowledge of activities offered, were reported by women. Only from old age, especially after retirement, with the improvement of the financial condition and the fact of having more free time, the women indicated an improvement in the access to physical activity, including the possibility of participating in the PCAF group. In general, the results revealed the difficulty of these women's access to PCAF throughout their lives and reinforce the importance of public actions and policies that seek to increase incentives and access to PCAF throughout women's lives

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to describe the physical activity (PA) in public open spaces (POS) in a medi-um-sized city in Brazil. The System for Observing Play and Recreation in Communities (SOPARC) was applied to evaluate a representative sample of users in 10 POS which received actions from the Active City, Healthy City Program. The places were evaluated four days a week (Tuesday, Wednes-day, Saturday, and Sunday) at four times (8 am, 10 am, 2 pm, and 4 pm). The proportion of users by gender, age group, skin color, and PA level was compared between the POS using the chi-square test for heterogeneity in the STATA software (p<0.05). As main results, 32,768 scans were performed in 64 target areas and identified 8,634 individuals. The highest proportion of people were males (58%), adults (38%), with white skin color (97%), and in light or moderate PA (76%). Except for skin color, there was a significant difference in the proportion of all other variables between the POS (p < 0.05). In conclusion, the POS was more commonly used by men, adults, and people of white skin color for light and moderate PA. Based on the results, program managers could reallocate resources to increase utilization and PA at each place

ABSTRACT

Sexuality is a basic need that remains with aging and is related to sexual function as well as perceptions of the body and genital image. This study aims to verify the association between sexual function and body image and genital self-image of physically active elderly women. Quantitative, explanatory, and retrospective study with 132 elderly women from a physical activity center. An adapted evalua- tion form, Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI), Body Appreciation Scale (BAS), and the Female Genital Self-Image Scale (FGSIS) were used. The sample showed signs of sexual dysfunction (FSFI = 18.8 ± 12.7) as well as a good body image (BAS = 4.8 ± 0.4) and genital self-image (FGSIS = 25.4 ± 3). Sexual function was correlated with genital self-image (r = 0.231, p = 0.008), and with body image (r = 0.978, p = 0.000) and between genital self-image and body image (r = 0.389, p = 0.000). When separating the domains of sexual function, all showed a correlation with body image. With genital self- image, satisfaction was not correlated (r = 0.131 and p = 0.132). It is relevant to investigate aspects related to the sexuality of the elderly as they can interfere with the quality of life and physical, psychological, and social well-being.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Objective:To investigate the changes in gray matter volume (GMV) and abnormalities in structural covariant network (SCN) patterns in patients with chronic pontine infarction (PI).Methods:Patients with unilateral chronic PI (case group) with the first onset admitted to the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University and Tianjin Medical University General Hospital from October 2014 to June 2021 were prospectively included. At the same time, healthy subjects matched with age, gender and education years (normal control group) were included. High-resolution three-dimensional T 1 structural MRI images and behavioral scores of the subjects were collected. The voxel-based morphometry and two-sample t test were used to explore the differences in GMV between the groups. Using GMV differential brain regions as seed points, SCN was constructed to explore the abnormality of structural covariant patterns in patients with PI. Spearman rank correlation analysis was used to analyze the correlation between GMV in differential brain regions and behavioral scores. Results:A total of 60 patients with PI were enrolled, including 33 left PI and 27 right PI, while 34 healthy controls were also enrolled. Compared with the normal control group, the GMV in bilateral posterior cerebellar lobe decreased significantly in the left PI group, and the GMV in left anterior and posterior cerebellar lobes and the right posterior cerebellar lobe decreased significantly in the right PI group (Gaussian random field correction with voxel level P<0.001 and cluster level P<0.05, cluster voxel >20), and there was a significant correlation between GMV values in the left anterior and posterior cerebellar lobes and the right posterior cerebellar lobe and the motor function score ( P<0.05). In addition, compared with the normal control group, the right PI group had broader covariate brain regions and a significant increase in the number of structural connections between covariate brain regions (family-wise error correction with voxel level P<0.05, cluster voxel >20). Conclusions:The GMV in bilateral posterior cerebellar lobe decreases significantly in patients with chronic PI, and were secondary to broader covariate brain regions and structural connections. This may be the neural mechanism of impaired behavioral function in patients with PI.

ABSTRACT

Objective@#To establish the norm of the Physical Activity afterschool Questionnaire for Preschooler(P-PAQ) in urban areas of China, so as to provide a basis for graded guidance from the family perspective and to improve children s physical activity levels.@*Methods@#From October 2020 to January 2021, 6 267 children aged 3-6 years old were recruited from 40 kindergartens in eight cities across six major administrative regions by stratified cluster sampling, and the P-PAQ initially developed by the researchers of this study were completed by the primary caregivers. The questionnaire was administered to collect data relating to the amount of physical activity undertaken by the preschoolers, and the norm was determined by quartiles. Data relating to parental concepts of sports and parental behavior were assessed by calculating mean scores in order to establish the norm.@*Results@#Among preschoolers in urban areas, the M(P 25 ,P 75 ) of total physical activity time (min/day), moderate-to-vigorous physical activity time (min/day), outdoor time (min/day) and screen time (min/day) on school days outside kindergarten and on weekends were 84 (54,120), 22 (8,40), 12 (0,24) and 18 (6,30), and 170 (115,240), 60 (30,95), 90 (35,120) and 30 (20,60), respectively. When the score of parents sports concept and behavior (total score of 40) were≥34, 29-<34, 24-<29, <24, it was defined as four levels about above medium, medium, lower medium and lower, respectively. And for two dimensions, when the score of parental sports concept were ≥19, 17-<19, 15-<17, <15,and the score of parental behaviors were ≥16, 12-<16, 8-<12, <8, it was defined as four levels about upper medium, medium, lower medium and lower, respectively.@*Conclusion@#The norm of extracurricular activities among preschool children in Chinese cities has good representativeness and appropriate threshold values, which could provide a valuable reference for early assessment, as well as guidance in relation to out-of-school physical activity behaviors among children aged 3-6 years old.
